Mobile Game Development

Mobile Game Development

Developing a game on mobile is no way simpler than creating the classical computer game. Mobile development companies are well aware of the difficulties faced during the process, them being 3D or 2D graphics, fun element, tight story line, the competition and many others. With smart phones in reach of almost everyone – A game is needed by all to spare their free time and with diverse user group games also come with variety on themes. The mobile game development requires a dedicated team effort, consisting of developers, designers, content writers, testers, marketing gurus and many others. The process starts with developing an idea into sketches, then sketches into images, then images to interactive screens, then interactive screens to application which is released to the stores for the users to enjoy. In coming sections we will discuss about two major mobile development technologies namely, PhoneGap and JQuery Mobile.

The biggest problem faced for Mobile development is distribution of OS. Android and iOS being the giants, RIM, Windows and other OS are also in the list of Mobile OS. To develop an app for all platforms expertise in all of these are required, making a requirement of different teams for different operating systems. PhoneGap comes as a rescues for developers for this problem.

PhoneGap developers should have knowledge of HTML5, CSS and JavaScript instead of platform specific APIs. PhoneGap is mobile application development open source framework. The original product was made by Nitobi in summer of 2008 which was then acquired by Adobe in 2011. With PhoneGap developers have to write their app in HTML and JavaScript which is then deployed across mobile platforms. PhoneGap Build is cloud based service using PhoneGap as base allowing to build apps via cloud with ease. PhoneGap has a rich repository of APIs which interact with mobile phone features like Accelerometer, Camera, Geolocation, Notifications and many more across all platforms.

Adobe provided PhoneGap code to Apache Software Foundation (ASF) to maintain documentation, understanding and open governance of the project, which is named as Apache Cordova, that became a place to contribute efforts in improving PhoneGap.The next cross platform technique that will be discussed is JQuery Mobile. JQuery Mobile is touch optimized mobile framework. It is based on HTML5 and provides responsive web applications accessible across smartphones, and desktops. JQuery is an open source project maintained by JQuery foundation. If developers are familiar with jQuery then, jQuery Mobile built with jQuery as base will be easy to learn and implement. Some of the notable features include Ajax Navigation, responsive design, and theming framework.

The key profit for jQuery developer is in write less, do more approach with HTML5 Markup Driven configuration. Which allows less scripting and faster development for pages and behaviour. JQuery Mobile provides fast rendering with nominal use of images. It also has simple APIs to integrate support for touch and mouse based events. Along with all these features there is a powerful theming framework to customize the UI as per the branding, just use the ThemeRoller application to get customised CSS which can be included in the project.

Both of these cross platform technologies are in vogue. With jQuery Mobile providing intuitive web apps across all devices and PhoneGap providing native API supports. The decision of using any of the technology depends upon the requirements and which of these suits them the most.
